Wollastonite (4 g, 34 mmol) and CaCl2-2H2O (10.1 g, 68 mmol) were thoroughly ground together in a mortar and pestle. This mixture was then placed in a carbon boat which was inserted into a quartz tube. The quartz tube and its contents were heated to 775 deg for 17 h in a tube furnace while nitrogen gas was passed through the tube. After cooling to room temperature, 10.4 g of Ca8Si4O12Cl8, a hydroscopic white solid was obtained.
